About Us

The Women's Studies Department crosses traditional academic disciplines and studies the world's diverse cultures to investigate such topics as the roles of women in developing countries and in migration; the ways gender interacts with race, ethnicity, and class; women and culture; how gender categories operate in our own and other societies; the history of sex and sexuality; and new directions in feminist theory.

The research arm of the Women's Studies Department is Women in Coalition, which sponsors conferences, brings women scholar-activists from various countries to speak at UCR, and conducts research. The Rural Women's Environmental Project, for instance, coordinates the work of researchers and activists concerned with issues facing women farm workers in California.

The Department faculty has full-time appointments in Women's Studies or holds joint appointments with other UCR humanities or social science departments; other faculties throughout the College are affiliates who regularly teach in Women's Studies. Faculty members have received research funding from federal, state, and private agencies; a number have done field research or taught in other countries. Alongside professional prominence, our faculty pride themselves on innovative and effective teaching.

The Department offers a Bachelors of Arts in Women's Studies. Lower-division courses familiarize students with the major issues in Women's Studies and the newest research on gender and sexuality. Upper division core and elective courses help students understand the varieties of feminist thought; how knowledge is produces in Women's Studies, and state-of-the-art research on gender and sexuality.

The Department also offers an approved subject matter preparation program for the Multiple Subject teaching credential. Students who complete such a program are exempt from subject matter examinations when applying for a teaching credential program.

Why Major / Minor in Women's Studies?

Women's Studies provides students with a solid background in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Our Women's Studies graduated have developed challenging careers in public service and the private sector. They work in major corporations, in government, and with non-governmental agencies in the USA and in other countries. Some are now educators, some health care administrators and practitioners, and a number are pursuing graduate studies in law, humanities, social sciences, or the arts.

With a Women's Studies degree, you are better prepared to address issues facing women today. You have the kind of background to become a policy-maker at local, state, and national levels. You can work with community development agencies to create programs that address and prevent gendered violence. You can work with non-governmental agencies to solve the health, economic, and social problems that affect women around the world and throughout their lives. You can help design and implement programs to help young girls develop the kinds of skills and self-esteem that you have developed.

If you decide upon a career in the corporate sector, a degree in Women's Studies prepares you for the diverse workplaces that contemporary firms have become. You will understand how to manage in new ways, informed by feminist process. Your team efforts will be more creative and successful, because you understand how to accomplish things through cooperation and collaboration instead of the outmoded authoritarian ways. You will be able to create healthy work environments, free from sexual harassment, based on respect. Your analytical skills will help you develop policies that can ease work/home life tensions.

UCR Women's Studies graduates put into practice the kind of leadership skills that are learned through their awareness of how women in many walks of life organize to make lives better for themselves and their communities. Through their understanding of gender dynamics, our graduated can relate to the range of people and kinds of families in today's world. Rigorous training and a global perspective give out graduates options throughout life that people who are not so educated simply don't have.

If you think you want a more traditional major, please consider a double major with Women's Studies. Such a double major makes you look well grounded, more contemporary, and more open minded - a combination many employers today are eager to attract.
