Background/Hopes/Her Stories

Application/Statement of Interest

Solidarity Work: May 4-7, 2006

Please do read our précis document carefully in order to get a clear sense of our constraints, our selection process, and our general vision before you send in your application. Do get back to us if you are interested in participating on other projects around these themes. We are sorry that we cannot accommodate everyone but we hope this is one of many beginnings.

NOTE: If you cannot respond to this form in English, please respond in your native language and we will try to get a translator to help us. Members of our Organizing Team and Advisory Board are familiar with several languages.

DEADLINE:  JANUARY 10, 2006

You can send in your application in either one of two ways:

Hardcopy mail to:
Solidarity Project/Organizing Retreat
c/o University of California
Center for Ideas and Society
1150 University Avenue
Riverside, CA 92521-0439

If mailing cost is prohibitive, please send a note to solidaritywork@yahoo.com and we will try to reimburse you.

If you would like an electronic version of this application, or if you have any questions please send all correspondence to solidaritywork@yahoo.com.  Please be sure to include the following:

  • Name
  • Organizational Affiliation (if any)
  • Mailing address
  • Phone
  • Fax
  • Mobile
  • E-mail

Please note: Please provide us with as much information as possible.  You don’t have to answer all these questions in this exact format but this is the kind of information we would like to know about and if you can answer some of these, with some detail, it will be helpful for our selection process.

  • Visions & Outcomes:
    • Please provide a brief description of your political, policy or scholarly work and ways that it could fit into our general vision. (Please include supplementary material if you wish but your own words will be helpful). Use additional pages if necessary. If you would like to bring to the table your organization’s vision, then please be explicit about how your organization’s work intersects with our organizing vision.

    • Since we are open-ended about outcomes, we would be particularly interested in what you might envision as long-term and tangible outcomes. Please be detailed in terms of solidarity work and alliance building ideas that we could incorporate into these few days.
    • Do you have any specific themes for workshops, trainings, discussions, entertainment, and/or open-circle discussions that you would like to lead during this time? Please let us know, in particular, if you are interested in leading a “training session” on international human rights and how you would organize this. If you have any previous organizing experience especially around alliance building and campaign work around the basic themes we have outlined, we would be particularly interested in this.

  • Your participation:
    • Please give us a sense of the kind of material you would like to share with us at this event. This could be photography, a scholarly paper, a testimonial, or any other creative presentation. Do give us a sense of how much time you might need and let us know if you are interested in presenting a collective/collaborative presentation.  How can we assist your presentation?
    • Are you interested in hosting some creative exhibition or entertainment for this event? (This could include spoken word, music/songs, slide shows, film, photography, dance, theatre etc.) Please give us details. Please note that we cannot promise any honorarium or additional payment at this stage.

    • Will you need a translator? If yes, please give us some specific needs around translation.
  • Future Campaigns & Organizing:
    • If we cannot accommodate you at this particular event, will you and your organization still be interested in being part of our network and campaigns on these issues?

    • What kind of campaign might you be interested in initiating through such a space?
    • Would you be interested in being on the Board or Steering Committee of a more permanent institution on anti-racist and internationalist women’s human rights? How might you envision such an institution?

Please don’t apply to participate if you cannot commit 100% to being at the venue.
