Gender Resources at UCR The Department supports a video library in the main office (1146 Watkins) that is available to interested faculty and students. The library consists of documentaries and talks related to gender and sexuality and includes a number of works that are from countries outside the United States. The Women's Studies Student Internship program places interested students in unpaid, supervised positions with community agencies that address women's and sexuality issues. Students work in conjunction with a faculty member and can obtain course credit through WMST 198-I. Cooperating local agencies include Alternatives to Domestic Violence, the Riverside Area Rape Crisis Center, and the Riverside Art Museum. The Women's Studies Department enjoys collaborative relations with a number of organized research units on campus, including the Centers for Ideas and Society, the Families First Project, the Ernesto Galarza Center, and the Institute for Research on World Systems (IROWS). Our own research group, Women in Coalition, orchestrates collaborative projects throughout the region. Gender, Education & Resource Services sponsors numerous workshops, conferences, and special events for students and the wider community throughout the academic year. You can visit GEARS for information about issues facing college women today: workplace dynamics, work/family coordination, and women's health. Friendly staff can provide referrals if desired. Rape Prevention and Sexual Harassment Education This office can be reached through the Gender, Education & Resource Services in Costo Hall. Provides victim advocacy, crisis intervention, and educational programs for student organizations and courses. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex Resource Center sponsors events throughout the academic year to educate the campus community about sexualities. The LGBTI Center programs support students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or intersex, as well as those interested in learning more about these identities or practices and friends supporting those who are. The LGBTI Center provides students with information and referrals about sexuality issues, such as coming out, homophobia, sexual harassment, gay/lesbian bashing, family formation, and community-building. It also runs the Allies Program, which trains interested students, faculty, and staff about how to be supportive of students who are LGBTI. Various student organizations celebrate our ethnic and racial diversity and help our community understand issues of contemporary concern. All across the UCR campus you can find cultural events and activities focused on women, gender, or sexuality issues through various departments, research centers, the Sweeney Art Gallery, and the California Museum of Photography. |
